Linfox commits to electronic stability control for BP contract

Trucking giant will have anti-rollover trailer technology for new BP contract


Linfox is not waiting for government regulation before ensuring anti-rollover stability control is fitted on its fuel tankers for BP contracts.

Linfox recently won the contract to supply BP fuel to Sydney and Newcastle. BP fuel contracts are currently being tendered nationwide.

A Linfox spokesman has confirmed that for the BP contract, both the trucks and trailers, which will be new vehicles, will have electronic stability control (ESC).

Stability control for dangerous goods tankers has become a big issue in the wake of the fatal Cootes Transport tanker tragedy at Mona Vale in Sydney last year.

In February this year the New South Wales Government ordered that from July 1 all new dangerous goods tanker trailers operating in the State must have stability control.

In March the Government followed that up with a requirement that any dangerous goods tanker operating in NSW has to have ESC by 2019.

With dangerous goods tankers often being up to 20 years old, it could mean a lot of retrofitting will be required.

A NSW Environment Protection Authority spokesman estimated to ATN that re-fitting of older tankers could cost up to $10,000.

The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) says it welcomes the NSW Government’s announcements on stability control for new and old tankers, but has urged the rest of the states to follow suit as soon as possible.  

The ATA is also calling for the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) to coordinate a national database of coroners’ recommendations in relation to fatal truck crashes. The database would also record government responses to those recommendations.

This would be a first step towards the ATSB investigating selected fatal truck crashes. At present the ATSB only investigates incidents involving ships, planes and trains.
