The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has released its summary of national vehicle sales for June 2024, with the continuing strong sales of light commercial vehicles helping drive the industry to historically strong overall numbers.
Almost 28,000 light commercial vehicles were purchased across Australia in the month of June, where it is second in class behind SUVs. So far this year over 142,000 light commercial vehicles have been bought across the nation.
The FCAI says the continued strong sales of light commercial vehicles and SUVs (65,248 sales in June) is due to the versatility they can provide to the Australian consumer market.
More heavy commercial vehicles were sold in June (5466) than any other month this year, however the heavy commercial vehicle market is down 17.6 per cent when compared to the same month last year.
Through the first half of 2024 25,735 heavy vehicles have been sold Australia-wide.
2024 has, so far, been a historically strong year for vehicle sales across the board. The 632,412 vehicles sold in the first six months of the year is a year-to-date increase of 8.7 per cent on 2023 and has surpassed the record of 605,522 set in 2018.
FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber says while the historically high number of sales is positive for the industry, he hopes to see an increase in electric vehicle sales in the second half of the calendar year.
“The end of the financial year has traditionally been a strong month for vehicle sales and achieving 632,412 sales in just six months is a testament to the resilience of the market,” Weber says.
“Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) saw a slight decrease in sales accounting for eight per cent of new sales, down from 8.8 per cent at the same month last year.”
Electric vehicles have accounted for over 50,000 sales in 2024 alone, and Weber says her hopes that momentum can continue.
“We hope to break the significant milestone of 100,000 EV sales in 2024.”
