Les Wielinga to oversee Victorian infrastructure development

Former director general of NSW Transport will lead the new Major Transport Infrastructure Board

The former head of transport in NSW will lead a new board to oversee transport infrastructure development in Victoria.

Les Wielinga has been handpicked by the Victorian government to chair its new Major Transport Infrastructure Board, with public transport minister Jacinta Allen saying his experience will be “invaluable” in ensuring projects are delivered effectively.

As director-general of NSW Transport and Infrastructure between 2009 and 2013, Wielinga oversaw the delivery of the North-West Rail Link and Sydney Light Rail projects.

His new role will see him working on projects such as the Melbourne Metro rail project and the removal of 50 level crossings around the state.

“With $15 billion of new transport infrastructure being planned and delivered by the Andrews Labor government, it is critical that we secure the very best leaders in project delivery,” Allen says.

“The Major Transport Infrastructure Board will work closely with project delivery authorities to ensure the projects this state needs are delivered on time and on budget, in partnership with local communities.”

The government plans to consult with Wielinga on additional board appointments, with the hope of assembling a diverse team with expertise in different project delivery disciplines.

Allen has also announced the appointment of former Victorian treasurer John Lenders to the chairmanship of VicTrack.

He will replace the retiring Bob Annells at the head of the state’s rail asset owner.

“Mr Lenders brings a wealth of experience that will be invaluable in managing Victoria’s vast network of railway land, assets, and telecommunications,” the minister says.
