Freight operators travelling down Burley Griffin Way will now benefit from the completion of an $11 million safety boost at Goondah.
“Burley Griffin Way is a key route on the road network, linking the Hume Highway to the Riverina, and the Olympic and Newell Highways,” Labor spokesperson for Goulburn Bob Nanva MLC says.
“This $11 million investment in safety upgrades will reduce the frequency and risk of fatal and serious injury crashes on this important freight corridor.”
The upgrades have delivered greater visibility on the 3.6 kilometre section by removing vegetation, as well as improving curves by widening the road.
The improvements also included the installation of 4.5 kilometres of safety barriers to reduce trauma from run-off-road crashes, and audio-tactile line marking, also known as rumble strips, to alert drivers when they travel outside their lane.
“The wider shoulders will provide better protection for motorists on Burley Griffin Way, and safety barriers have been shown to reduce the severity of high-risk crashes by up to 95 per cent,” Nanva says.
“Safer roads benefit everyone – including local families, local businesses and transport workers too.
“These are the kinds of practical upgrades that make a real difference for regional communities, freight operators and everyone who relies on Burley Griffin Way.”
The work also included drainage improvements and a dedicated right turn lane into Goondah Road to make it safer for vehicles exiting the highway.
Work on the project started in July last year, with the safety upgrades delivered as part of the Australian and NSW governments’ Road Safety Program, aimed at reducing road trauma.
