Kenworth, Isuzu continue truck sale market dominance

Medium duty truck sales are up when compared to 2023, but November’s T-Mark data indicates there will be an overall truck sales fall for 2024

As 2024 winds to a close it is looking likely that there will be fewer trucks sold across the calendar year than compared to 2023, however medium and heavy-duty truck sales have remained strong.

An overall year-to-date drop of 1584 light-duty trucks sold has formed the majority of the overall 3.9 per cent sales decline. In addition, there has been a total sales decline of 46 heavy-duty trucks year-on-year, while medium-duty trucks have experienced a small increase in sales of 146 total trucks.

Kenworth has maintained its dominance of the heavy-duty sector in November with a total of 338 truck sales, which is incidentally the exact same number of sales as November 2023.

Its total of 3416 sales for the year represents a 20.7 per cent market share and over 500 more sales than its closest competitor, Volvo.

Isuzu has leapfrogged Volvo into second place for November heavy duty truck sales with a total of 225 compared to Volvo’s 115.

However, both manufacturers have suffered declines in their year-to-date heavy duty truck sales.

Dennis Eagle proved to be something of a disruptor in the heavy-duty market for November, with its 22 truck sales for the month accounting for over a quarter of its yearly sales to date.

Isuzu has also continued its dominance of the improving medium-duty segment with its 3771 year-to-date sales accounting for over half of all trucks sold in the category.

Fuso’s November 2024 was markedly improved on its November sales efforts last year, with 113 trucks sold last month compared to 78 in the same time last year, which means the manufacturer has made up some of its lost ground on its overall 2024 sales drop.

Overall, Fuso has sold 934 medium duty trucks in 2024 so far compared to 1121 in the same period last year.

Isuzu is almost as dominant in the light-duty truck market as it is in the medium market, with a 46.2 per cent market share despite an overall sales reduction of over 10 per cent across the light-duty category.

Despite its massive market share, Isuzu has endured a hit in the overall light duty truck sales, with its year-to-date mark of 6186 in 2024 way down on its 2023 year-on-year comparison of 6806.

Fuso and Hino once again finish second and third with light duty truck sales for the month, with Iveco continuing to keep the pressure on the established ‘big three’.

Renault leapfrogged Mercedes-Benz in November’s light-duty truck sales, with its 54 monthly sales accounting for almost a quarter of its 289 sales for the year.
