A bridge on the Western Highway will be upgraded to ensure trucks travelling between Melbourne and Victoria’s western region continue to have a direct route.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese says work is due to begin this month on strengthening the bridge over the rail line at Kaniva.
The $2.6 million project will strengthen the bridge’s deck and install new safety barriers and guard fences.
“As well as making the highway safer for all users, this project will strengthen the bridge to make sure truck drivers can continue to use this direct route between Melbourne and the state’s western region,” Albanese says.
“Every day, more than 1,000 trucks use the Kaniva rail bridge.”
Albanese says the project will be delivered in two stages and take about six months to complete to avoid disruption to motorists.
Restrictions on oversized vehicles greater than 3.6 metres in width will apply while the work is being carried out.
Drivers of these vehicles are being asked to contact the VicRoads permit office during business hours on 03 9881 8852 for advice on an appropriate detour, or 03 5333 8777 for other inquiries.
“Work will be done on one half of the bridge while temporary traffic lights allow vehicles to continue crossing the bridge. Once complete, the same process will be undertaken at the other end of the bridge,” Victorian Roads Minister Terry Mulder says.
