General freight and removals company Ryans has taken over Kalari’s regional Victoria freight operations.
The specialist bulk logistics provider to the mining and resources sector sold its Hamilton depot at an undisclosed price, which includes the transition of its customers and five staff to Ryans.
The Warrnambool-based Ryans has three other depots in Horsham, Melbourne and Adelaide.
Kalari Communications Manager Emmy McKenzie says the company decided to sell its depot as part of a business restructure.
“We specialise in mining operations, transporting typical mining products in logistics,” McKenzie says.
She also pointed to a decline in work in the general freight sector as part of the reason for Kalari’s move.
“We thought it’d be more capable in local people’s hands that are already specialised in general freight whereas general freight was becoming less and less frequent to us,” she says.
“So to keep the business viable we had to make sure we were doing business in the areas that we specialise in and not in the areas where we were getting less and less contracts for.”
Kalari still plans to continue its strong presence in the region through its bulk logistics services with mining company Iluka Resources and other customers, McKenzie adds.
Ryans will serve existing customers from the depot using the current equipment.
Kalari was established in 1976 in Portland and became a fully-owned subsidiary of the John Swire and Sons group in 1994.
It now operates from Melbourne’s Laverton North and has nationwide depots.
