Western Australian trucking outfit JNK Express is benefiting from the growth of the state’s mining towns.

New figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) show population growth in mining towns is on the rise, with Karratha leading the way.

Growth in the Pilbara increased by nearly 9 percent between 2006 and 2011, the ABS says. Roxby Down, Newman and Middlemount are also on the rise.

“I can probably foresee another 50 percent increase for us in Karratha this year,” JNK Express Managing Director Jason Quilligan says.

His Kewdale-based firm, which has a depot in Karratha, began carrying construction, mining, oil and equipment to the Pilbara almost two years ago.

With 26 trucks going to the region daily and another six based permanently there, Quilligan has seen a significant increase in workload.

Eight employees have been put on since last year to meet demand and the company has also started carrying general freight and cars.
