Jetstar has introduced a freight service on flights to Asia for the first time and more is planned.

Until now, freight has not been a priority at Jetstar, but a company spokesperson tells SupplyChain Review this is all about to change.

Subject to regulatory approval, a codeshare agreement between Qantas and Jetstar, starting April 1, will enable a significant freight capacity on over 400 weekly Jetstar Asia and Valuair flights.

According to Qantas Freight, the freight service, already available, offers customers access to any of the 21 ports on the Jetstar Asia and Valuair networks.

“For exporters and forwarders in these ports, this means access to the breadth of the Qantas global network,” Qantas Freight says in a statement.

The Jetstar Asia (3K) and Valuair (VF) networks incorporate destinations throughout China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Vietnam, Philippines and Cambodia.

The network also includes the strategically important ports of Bangkok, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Osaka and Manila.

“The service utilises a fleet of A320 aircraft hubbing through Singapore, however aircraft are non-containerised and some restrictions apply,” Qantas Freight says.

The maximum freight capacity allowed is 4000 kilograms or 24m3, while the 1500 kilos or 9m3.

Delivery cut-off is 4 hours prior to published departure or as per local standards.

“Restrictions include loose shipments only, no livestock or domestic pets and no dangerous goods,” Qantas Fright says.

“Valuables are allowed by prior arrangement with a maximum piece weight of 100 kilos and maximum dimensions of 120/100/100 cm.”
