Iveco dominates Africa Eco Race

Gerard De Rooy wins the first place in the truck category of the Africa Eco Race 2018, having remained dominant from the start.

The Africa Eco Race 2018 comes to an end after 12 stages and 6,500 km across three countries, with IVECO remaining dominant in the truck category throughout.

Petronas De Rooy Iveco team leader Gerard De Rooy took pole position in the truck category after maintaining the lead throughout the rally, covering a range of the most challenging terrain in the world.

For the eighth year in a row Iveco provided the winning crew with all the vehicles, engines and spare parts, landing them victory.

The Iveco Powerstars with Cursor 13 engines put out 1000hp and are subjected to extreme use.

The final stage saw the drivers compete in a short, final boost in the traditional last leg around Lake Rose, near Dakar.

Strong crowds offered support for competitors and celebrated the winners as they took to the podium on the beach of the lake.

De Rooy says he enjoyed both the beauty and the challenges that came with race.

“I enjoyed both the beautiful specials and the toughness,” he adds.

“That was what it was all about in the first place: having fun again. They were long specials, but still short days because we had almost no connection. I really look back on it with a very good feeling.”
