Isuzu unveils bold innovations at Tokyo Show

Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) has welcomed Isuzu Group’s, world-leading innovation stance, following the unveiling of the Isuzu Motors Group’s advanced technology showcase at the Japan Mobility Show 2025.

To ‘convey the power of transport,’ and incorporate ‘the spirit of diverse mobility solutions,’ this year’s group theme was ‘Move the World, Envision a Colourful Future’.

Isuzu’s centrepiece was a powerful vision for carbon neutrality with the practical ‘Multi-Fuel Engine’ (MFE) concept, demonstrating a single, robust engine platform capable of running on diesel, biofuel, synthetic fuel, or hydrogen.

Presenting alongside it was the next-generation Isuzu heavy-duty GIGA prime mover.

“The Japan Mobility Show is particularly informative for us in Australia, to see first-hand the Isuzu Group showcase in 2025 and engage with our Japanese counterparts,” IAL director and COO Andrew Harbison says.

“As always, there’s plenty of thought-provoking concepts on show this year, from a number of OEMs, but some of the developments showcased are not just conceptual, they’re a clear and practical roadmap for our industry’s transition.

“[The Isuzu’s Multi-Fuel Engine] acknowledges that the path to a low-carbon future will vary by region and requires flexible solutions that leverage existing refuelling infrastructures.

“For a demanding market like Australia, where reliability and operational range are non-negotiable, this technology offers a compelling potential pathway to reduce emissions without compromising the performance our customers depend on.”

The engine allows businesses to choose a fuel type based on local availability, cost, and their specific sustainability goals, all while relying on the durability and efficiency of an Isuzu powertrain.

Set to define the next era of Isuzu trucks and making its global debut, was the new GIGA heavy-duty prime mover.

The design previews advancements in aerodynamics, driver ergonomics, and integrated systems, all of which align with the brand’s commitment to providing commercial vehicle operators with the most efficient, safe, and productive vehicles on the road.

“The new GIGA’s premiere was a landmark moment for Isuzu globally and with the acquisition of UD Trucks now complete, helps to re-position the global brand as having a compelling heavy-duty offer,” Harbison says.

“It gives the world a glimpse into the future of Isuzu’s heavy-duty line-up, combining Isuzu’s signature aesthetics with a new generation of intelligent design. We’re looking closely at this space to consider exactly what solution best suits Australia’s unique and challenging conditions.”

Isuzu also showcased the futuristic Vertical Core Cycle Concept (VCCC) in Tokyo, designed to be compatible with a wide range of configurations, adaptable to many different applications.

Its modular concept would allow vehicles to be rearranged in units of key components, which enables highly flexible and efficient operation.

IAL chief strategy officer Kylie Barlin says it’s encouraging to see their parent company’s forward thinking, while also getting a read on where their competitors’ heads are at.

“Ultimately, concept ideas such as the vertical core are about offering users unprecedented freedom and adaptable mobility solutions – a key focal point of Isuzu Group’s future-focussed outlook,” she says.

“It’s a fascinating time to be a part of the broader mobility space right now. Never before in the history of our industry have we seen such a proliferation of both technological and behavioural change applied to this space.

“It’s evolving rapidly, and it’s great to have Isuzu truly at the forefront of this thinking.”
