Truck sales set new monthly record

Truck sales have grown in every category, while van sales continue to recover.

The Truck Industry Council (TIC) reports that July sales numbers show a growth in sales in all categories of trucks and a new record for sales of heavy vehicles.

Van sales, however, have been down compared to the previous year as they have been all year — due to supply chain issues.

Last July saw the previous record of 3,334, set in 2018, beaten by 150 as 3,494 vehicles were sold in total.

The monthly sales were ahead of the previous year by an extra 198 vehicles. While total heavy vehicles sales year-to-date are running 5 percent about the previous year and 4.4 percent above 2018.

Heavy duty truck sales were also positive, with a 4 percent increase in monthly sales and a large 17.2 percent increase in sales year-to-date.

The medium duty truck sector also had strong numbers with an 11 percent increase in monthly numbers and almost the same numbers for year to date at 11.9 percent.

Sales for light trucks were up by 14.6 percent for the month and 10.2 percent year-to-date.

Light duty vans were the only sector to be reporting negative sales figures. Monthly sales were down by 15.2 percent and year-to-date figures down by 30.8 percent. These negative figures are reflective of consistent supply chain issues in Europe were most of the parts for the vans are sourced.

Chief Executive Officer of TIC Tony McMullan is pleased with the overall sales reports.

“We saw record sales in the first half of 2022, culminating in a new June 2022 truck sales record. This is a great start to quarter three and the back half of the year,” says McMullan.
