NT Cleanaway drivers begin strike

Garbage truck drivers from Cleanaway have held a one-day strike in Darwin according to the TWU

The Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) has announced that members of Darwin’s Cleanaway garbage truck driver team have gone on strike last Friday in response to working conditions.

The TWU says Cleanaway Darwin drivers fought for their rates on Friday in the City of Palmerston area, taking 24-hour strike action over Cleanaway’s alleged attempts to limit safe working conditions and fatigue management provisions.

Across the country, Cleanaway is negotiating with workers over enterprise agreements that the TWU says produces an unfair deal for drivers.

“These workers are standing up and taking action against Cleanaway’s all-out assault on safe working conditions and fair wages,” the TWU SA/ NT says on its Facebook page.

“They just want a fair deal – one that won’t send them backwards or compromise safety at work and on our roads.”

The TWU says the 24-hour strike was the Cleanaway garbage truck driver’s way of refusing current enterprise agreement offerings.

“These workers are saying no to Cleanaway’s deal,” the TWU says.

“They’re fighting for a fair wage increase, good secure jobs and safety at work and on our roads.”
