TWU to enforce power in major yards

The TWU says it will continue pushing for fair and safe rates in major transport yards

The Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) is praising the work of members and delegates that have acted across from major yards to build power and enforce agreements for safe rates and conditions.

The TWU says it has secured wins in the past year that include strengthened clauses on full utilisation, outside hire, redundancies, fleet operators and ratios for permanent workers, but that the hard work continues.

The union is now planning to implement a strategy that uses these provisions to maximise full-time safe and secure work for transport workers while also holding companies to account for unfair behaviour.

The TWU says it plays a crucial role in enforcing these wins secured by TWU members, as it works to actively strengthen transport workers in the industry and improve safety for the coming years.

Last month the TWU brought together delegates and members to enforce these agreements by firstly auditing the major yards to ensure they comply with commitments to outside-hire ratios.

The TWU says it will audit state-by-state to ensure that companies move to prioritise full-time permanent jobs and use the information when bargaining recommences to increase ratios again.

The TWU will also fight for full-utilisation clauses across major agreements including pushing for permanent full-time workers to be given available hours including overtime.

It will also fight for labour hire, casual conversion and adequate site rates, as well as fleet operator transparency so that operators can’t undercut employees.

It’s all designed to show union strength, allowing the TWU to continue prioritising fair and safe work for the transport industry.
