NSW selects M12 contract recipient

The state government has announced which company will construct the main part of the new M12

The New South Wales government has announced the recipient of its contract to construct the new M12 motorway near Sydney.

Vinci subsidiary Seymour Whyte has won the contract, estimated to be worth $373 million, to construct the main section of the M12 motorway linking the future Western Sydney airport to the Sydney motorway.

The NSW government expects the construction to create 760 jobs and provide a central connection from the proposed Western Sydney International Airport in Nancy-Bird Walton to Sydney’s main transport network.

If completed, the government estimates more than 52,000 vehicles a day will be able to use the new road and ease congestion.

The Vinci contract includes the construction of 7.5 kilometres worth of two-by-two lanes, 11 bridges, cycle and pedestrian paths, networks, intelligent transport systems and green spaces.

Seymour Whyte says it wants to receive an excellent sustainability rating from the Australian Infrastructure Sustainability Council on the project by recycling 95 per cent of the excavated material and reusing 40 per cent of the sub-base layers along with limiting water usage on site.

The NSW government expects Seymour Whyte to begin working midway through 2022 and for the project to be completed by the end of 2025 before Western Sydney International Airport is expected to open in 2026.

Seymour Whyte will deliver the new airport’s landside civil and building works that include integrating the new M12 motorway with the airport’s two metro stations.
