Heavy vehicle safety focus for National Road Safety Week
It's National Road Safety Week

The New South Wales government and National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) are urging all road users to take care around heavy vehicles as part of the 2022 National Road Safety Week.

NSW regional transport and roads minister Sam Farraway says the week serves as a reminder for all drivers to familiarise themselves with driving safely around heavy vehicles.

"There were 52 deaths in crashes involving heavy vehicle last year and while this number is steadily declining, there is more work to do," Farraway says.

"I want all road users to recognise that trucks take longer to stop, have large blind spots and require extra care when overtaking them.

"Often a truck crash can be avoided if light vehicle drivers are aware of the dangers of driving around a truck."

Farraway says that the government is joining forces with the NHVR during National Road Safety Week to promote driving safely around heavy vehicles.

The NSW minister says that all drivers can learn to drive safer around trucks and to make the roads less dangerous for everyone.

The NHVR is also vocal about the week, providing a range of information to help light vehicle drivers stay safe around trucks, including the We Need Space and Don’t Muck with a Truck campaigns.

"To support National Road Safety Week, our stakeholder engagement teams will be holding a National Truck Driver Information Day in four locations across the country, so no matter which freight route you’re travelling on, drop in for a chat," NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto says.

"These information days are important for our team to only answer heavy vehicle questions and support drivers but to also get feedback from the industry."

National Road Safety Week is occurring from now until this Friday.
