Australian truck sales boom while vans falter

The council released truck and van sales results for April

The Truck Industry Council (TCI) has released its truck and van sales results for the month of April as truck sales continue to rise while van sales struggle.

Sales of trucks and heavy vans for April finished at 3,306 sales, which was down 491 units on March but 91 vehicles, or 2.8 per cent, higher than the sales made in April 2021.

This result is an all-time sales record for the month of April, eclipsing the sales set by April 2021.

The year-to-date sales also currently sit at a record high with 12,123 heavy vehicle deliveries to the end of April, which is 297 vehicles more than the previous record year in 2018.

In particular, the heavy duty truck segment was up again in April for a total of 1,036 units delivered, which is an 11.5 per cent increase from April last year.

Heavy vehicle sales are tracking upwards, up by 20.3 per cent over the same time in April last year.

The medium duty truck sales sit at 632 for April, which is a 12.1 per cent gain from this time last year, with April’s sales also keeping the year-to-date sales trending upwards.

In comparison, light duty truck sales witness modest growth, with April sales totalling 1,218 vehicles to make for an all-time April sales record.

However light duty vans recorded only 420 sales for April, which is down 31 per cent, or 189 vans, on April 2021 sales.

“It is encouraging to see another good result in April to follow the solid first quarter figures,” TCI CEO Tony McMullan says.

“It’s particularly encouraging to see truck sales showing such continued strength, however van sales are significantly down and are showing no immediate signs of improving.”

Despite sitting on record sales growth in the truck sales department, McMullan hopes to see van sales also increase despite government inflation.

“The recent interest rate from the Reserve Bank is a reminder that ongoing policy decisions may have some effect on new vehicle sales moving forward,” McMullan says
