Coles and Linfox introduce electric truck

The pair will introduce a Fuso eCanter to help deliver in NSW

Coles has announced it will begin using an electric-powered truck to deliver stock to New South Wales stores under a trial with electric vehicles with transport partner Linfox Logistics.

Coles and Linfox will use a Fuso eCanter truck, which is powered entirely by 100 per cent renewable electricity, to deliver groceries from Coles’ Eastern Creek distribution centre in Sydney’s west to various Coles supermarkets across NSW.

The electric truck will be a first for Coles and will help the company to avoid more than 60 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions each year.

Coles says the electric truck trial is a significant step for Coles in its sustainability strategy and demonstrated how Coles is working with transport partners to reduce its carbon footprint.

“Coles’ first electric truck is a big step to introducing alternate fuel technologies to our supply chain and we’re excited about the opportunity to see more electric vehicles delivering groceries to our distribution centres and supermarkets in the future,” Coles head of transport sustainability David Clark says.

“By working with Linfox we have considered the sustainability of the truck from its carbon footprint when operating to the end-of-lifecycle impacts on the environment.”

Coles says it sought supplier partners who aligned with its sustainability values and that Linfox was a natural fit for the electric truck project.

Clark says he hopes the two companies can work together to see how electric truck technologies evolves and to reach sustainability targets together.

Linfox executive chairman Peter Fox says: “Working in partnership with a trusted Australian retailer such as Coles is where the switch to electric vehicles can make the biggest difference.”

Coles customers with electric vehicles can also enjoy charging their cars while they shop at certain Coles and Coles Express sites, with the company setting up electric-charging stations at 14 total sites last year.
