NHVR encourages compliance with HVNL in hay bale loading and transport
The NHVR is reminding operators of heavy vehicles and heavy vehicle combinations transporting round hay bales to restrain bales safely and in manner that complies with the loading requirements in the Heavy Vehicle National Law.
The reminder comes after an increased number of heavy vehicles inspected by NHVR’s Safety and Compliance Officers found round hay bales were not adequately secured or were not secured using an appropriate restraint method.
Poorly loaded or inadequately restrained loads can cause hay bales to dislodge or fall, posing a significant safety risk to workers and other road users.
To secure round hay bales:
- Use a single strap to secure each stack of bales.
- Use diagonal straps at the front and rear of the trailer, with the bracing pulling towards the middle of the trailer.
- It is strongly recommended to use belly straps to secure the first two set of bales, this method is recognised as industry best practice.
Remember to also stop and check the load during your trip, as the load may have moved or settled in transit.
