Industry suppliers gain Australia Day honours
The Medal of the Order of Australia

Fleet owners and managers were in short supply for this year’s Australia Day Honours list but the wider industry had two notable inclusions.

Storied Bolwell Corporation founder and director Campbell Bolwell gained a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to mechanical engineering.

"While more widely known for exciting kit cars, Bolwell Corporation is a significant heavy vehicle industry composite technology supplier and industrial designer, including producing hoods, roofs and fairings for Kenworth and Iveco prime movers," Heavy Vehicle Industry Australia (HVIA) noted.

Bolwell also has accomplishments as a designer and developer of pomposities and plastics and turned his insights and experiences into the 1991 book, Designer Creator Manager: Innovator's Guide to Successful Product Development.

Long-serving former MaxiTrans Industries chairman Ian Davis gained the same recognition, for service to the community and to the law.

Davis oversaw the then parts and trailer-manufacturing firm between 1995 and 2016, taking the position just after it became a listed company, its entry into the New Zealand and China markets and growth into the largest such enterprise.

Somewhat more peripherally but with an impact on the broad national transport and logistics industry was  Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) chair Rod Sims.

Sims received the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) medal for distinguished service to public administration in economic policy and regulatory roles.

These also included rising to be deputy secretary of both the then federal Department of Transport and Communications and the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

A staunch opponent of states privatising monopolies, such as ports, he was also economic advisor to then prime minister Bob Hawke.
