AirRoad has come under the control of Japanese logistics company Senko Group Holdings for an undisclosed sum.

After three decades of national road express, specialised transportation and supply chain services growth the Australia firm will join 11-year-old local subsidiary Senko Logistics Australia in a huge change of the latter’s domestic presence.

"By partnering with AirRoad, Senko will expand its 3PL business, combining AirRoad’s high-quality distribution service and Senko’s warehousing and logistics capability," the companies say.

"Existing AirRoad logistics customers will benefit from the larger organisation and through the provision of higher quality, efficient and effective logistics services with the added value of Senko’s global logistics networks.

"Together, the businesses have exciting growth opportunities in new market sectors, for example in the cold-chain business, by establishing long distance chilled/frozen products transport as well as area delivery.

"These developments will be underpinned by Senko’s innovative world-leading technology which includes advanced robotics."

It appears recent hefty local  growth in parcels and the express market generally is part of the impetus for the move.

"Importantly for the AirRoad and Senko partnership, AirRoad’s national distribution footprint and outstanding service performance with time-critical deliveries will continue to be highly valued in the growing Australian market," the companies say.

For current AirRoad clients, there will be benefits in working with Senko to strategically develop a more efficient warehouse and depot footprint in Australia.

"The Senko partnership will also bring additional benefits in relation to logistics services due to Senko’s wealth of knowledge and capability in this field and the use of world-leading technology."

Founded in 1916, Senko is a listed firm Japanese with a market capitalisation put at Yen125 billion (A$1.7 billion)
