DJ Morgan buys Mystgold in North Queensland merger
Chris McMurray and David Morgan

North Queensland trucking consolidation sees D.J Morgan Transport and Mystgold join forces for a combined fleet of 51 heavy vehicles.

No monetary value is put on the deal.

D.J Morgan Transport was established in 1997, led by David and Kellie Morgan, while Mystgold was started by Chris McMurray in 1991.

The former’s Kenworth-heavy fleet is used to contract freight to the western mines from the Townsville region and distribute produce on the east coast.

The latter originally ran the Mystgold refrigerated logistics operation out of Ingham before moving the business to Townsville in 2008.

"We have a strong and proud history in the region and, combined, the two operations have more than five decades of experience between them," David Morgan says.

"It’s incredibly exciting to be bringing these two companies together under the one ownership structure, adding significant horsepower to both businesses and their potential for growth into the future

"By merging D.J Morgan Transport and Mystgold, we are uniquely placed to service the growing North Queensland food transport market, ensuring producers from across regional Queensland are getting their product out to the rest of Australia and the globe more broadly.

"With more than 80 staff based in Townsville, we’re committed to the local region and growing the businesses long into the future.

"One thing that will never change is our ethos of quality, reliance and safety which will always remain the same."

Visa Global Logistics and Mondiale joined forces in another recent merger

Mystgold, the 2018 Woolworths Carrier of the Year, runs a dozen Freightliner Coronado 114 trucks in the operation, which haul Parmalat milk and Tip Top bread in addition to the Woolworths work, and recently had to take on half a dozen new staff due to Covid-19 demand surges.

With the business celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2021, McMurray says the time was right to hand over the reins of the operation.

"David and Kellie are wonderful, highly experienced people and Mystgold Ltd couldn’t be moving into safer hands.

"I’ll continue in the business over the next few years to offer support, ensuring there’s a smooth transition and sharing of knowledge."

"Together, we have the highest standard of equipment and skilled staff.

"To join that expertise under the one ownership structure can only mean good things for the future of the industry in North Queensland."

The parties were advised on the merger by PVW Partners and retain their respective trading names for the foreseeable future.
