Industry feedback sought on NHVIM update

NHVR announces heavy vehicle inspection manual review

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has started a five-yearly review of the National Heavy Vehicle Inspection Manual (NHVIM) and is seeking industry input on a revised draft.

The Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) requires that all heavy vehicles used on a road must comply with heavy vehicle standards.

Publication of the NHVIM provides inspectors and operators access to the same standards and criteria for which vehicles will be inspected nationally.

Developed with extensive industry consultation, all participating states and territories have adopted the NHVIM into their inspection regimes.

Use of a heavy vehicle on a road that does not comply with the standards can result either in an infringement or defect notice.

Consultation on NHVIM 3.0 began on December 7 and feedback can be submitted until January 29, 2021 via the NHVIM feedback form.

NHVR notes this is a consultation draft only.

“Before the final document is published, the regulator will undertake a full quality assurance process, including proof reading, insertion of appropriate images and diagrams, and final reformatting.

“The drafts are not to be regarded as an authorised standard until approved and issued by relevant heavy vehicle regulators.”

The NHVR is also seeking feedback on the revised draft VSB6 Section T – Tow Trucks, which has been updated to align with current design and construction techniques.

Consultation began on December 7 and feedback can be submitted until January 29.

Feedback on the NHVIM can be made here and the tow trucks here.
