Heavy truck and transport insurer NTI is looking to press ahead with its Driving a National Culture of Safety initiative after being named amongst the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s (NHVR’s) 2020 Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI) grant recipients.

The $300,000 grant supports NTI’s proposed, a 12 month campaign to deliver online, digital and interactive heavy vehicle educational content, with the aim to embed an industry-wide view on safety culture.

NTI developed the initiative to address customer insights revealing a need for better management of safety priorities within the industry and support for businesses in communicating these to their people to create better culture.

"Transport operators face a lot of demands in day-to-day operations," NTI chief sustainability officer Chris Hogarty says.

"On top of this, they need to decide which messages to share and how to deliver them for maximum impact across the most pressing safety concerns – fatigue, distraction, maintenance, driver management, safety technologies and effective scheduling & planning.

"NTI’s purpose is to keep Australian industry moving toward a safer and more sustainable future. We want to work with industry to empower them to be part of that movement and the NHVR’s 2020 Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative will help us get closer to that."

NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto notes the funding was part of $5.5 million being distributed across the country.

"Twenty-six recipients from across Australia will be supported to roll out programs targeting heavy vehicle safety," Petroccitto says.

"From road safety education, to truckie physical and mental health, to the investigation of braking technologies, tyres and pavement wear, these diverse projects will all make a big difference to safety.

"The NHVR is looking forward to working with the winning bids to ensure the projects deliver safety outcomes for all road users."
