The Transport Workers Union (TWU) almost gets its wish as Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) opens its online border travel permit system last night.

The union had hoped it would be up and running by the end of business hours.

TfNSW says the permit removes "the need for freight drivers to self-isolate for 14 days after entering NSW from Victoria". But that is only if their employers have a Covid-19 safety plan.

"Consistent with the need to prepare a COVID-19 Safety Plan, Transport for NSW is asking freight operators to be conscious of the significantly increased health risk in Victoria, to please take extra care and ensure that you are vigilant in practising physical distancing, minimising contact and maintaining good hygiene practices to limit the spread of the Coronavirus," TfNSW says.

"Any employees displaying symptoms of Covid-19 should not be required to come to work.

"While all efforts are being made to ensure freight moves as efficiently as possible, operators are encouraged to plan ahead as some delays may be experienced and to factor this into fatigue management plans."

The department notes that NSW ports and airports remain open for freight imports and exports and Australian Border Force advice supports vessels and aircraft arriving in Australian ports, subject to meeting specified criteria.
