Louts to blame for NSW washroom closures

TfNSW points to ongoing damage from antisocial behaviour

Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) points to vandalism, theft and criminal damage as reasons for having to close some washrooms used by truck drivers.

The move follows criticism from Australian Trucking Association (ATA) CEO Ben Maguire, who raised a closure at the Partridge VC Rest Area at Menangle on the Hume Motorway in response to NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian’s call for business to have a post-lockdown “go”.

TfNSW has highlighted theft of toilet paper and other antisocial acts occurring at rest areas across the state this year.

“Transport for NSW manages more than 600 rest areas across the state to ensure drivers are provided with a safe place to stop and take a break when driving long distances,” it stated on April 8.

“These rest areas are in place to improve safety for all drivers, including heavy vehicle operators, who are required to drive for extended periods and allow them to take rest breaks, use amenities and check their loads and vehicles.

“Disappointingly, toilet paper has been stolen and toilet facilities been vandalised at a number of rest areas across NSW.

“As a result of ongoing theft and vandalism, and limited supply, Transport for NSW will no longer be able to reliably supply toilet paper at rest areas across NSW until further notice.”

Partridge VC Rest Area is one of the rest areas damaged last month and it is understood was most recently damaged last week when a lock on a toilet cubicle was broken.

As a result of the damage, the cubicle has been temporarily closed.

The cubicle lock is expected to be repaired as soon as possible.

Although one cubicle is temporarily closed, the remaining three toilet cubicles are open for use, TfNSW indicates.
