Darwin’s Truck Central sees inspection facility open

Precinct addition welcomed during Covid-19 freight task

Darwin’s Truck Central sees inspection facility open
The truck inspection facility

Darwin’s flagship transport hub, Truck Central, now has an active vehicle inspection facility, seen as a timely development to aid the freight task during the Covid-19 crisis.

The federal and Northern Territory government jointly funded the $5.5 million project, which accompanies the 2019 opening of the road train assembly area.

The inspection facility comprises the latest testing equipment, an NT government statement notes, and is strategically located near East Arm, enabling the inspection of large vehicles such as road trains to occur away from the Goyder Road Test Shed in Parap.

Truck Central comprises a three-hectare concrete hardstand area with 55 large vehicle parking bays that can accommodate triple road trains, B-doubles and semi-trailers, and includes a concrete loading ramp.

It is the first stage of a 90ha industrial precinct, bounded by the major heavy transport routes of Tiger Brennan Drive, Berrimah Road and Wishart Road.

Infrastructure, planning and logistics minister Eva Lawler hails the opening supporting the freight industry "during this unprecedented time", especially with mandated exemptions for truck and rest facilities to remain open during the Covid-19 crisis, helping heavy vehicle operators meet their legal mechanical and fatigue management requirements.

"Our freight industry has never been more important," Lawler says.

"This new facility improves access for industry and supports getting the essentials out to the community quicker and more efficiently.

"It is a modern facility that is equipped with the latest testing equipment. The location of this facility is strategically located near East Arm – a growing hub for logistics, trade, oil and gas, and marine activities that rely heavily on a well serviced trucking industry.

"Ultimately, Truck Central will be a one stop transport hub, creating many direct jobs around refuelling, inspections and servicing, as well as delivering efficiencies for surrounding industries to create further employment opportunities for Territorians."
