Tyne ACFS responds to Port Botany incident

Operator confirms fatality and is assisting with inquiries

Container operator Tyne ACFS advises it is cooperating with authorities following a fatal incident at Sydney’s Port Botany yesterday as it extends its sympathies towards the deceased worker.

Reports indicate a 64-year-old was killed after he became trapped between two empty shipping containers.

Tyne ACFS, a joint venture between ACFS (Australian Container Freight Services) Port Logistics and Tyne Container Service, confirmed the incident and said it was assisting with investigations.

“Our sincere condolences go to the family, friends and work colleagues of our well-liked and respected employee,” it says in a statement.

“We are doing all we can to support his family and our workforce.

“An investigation is being undertaken by the NSW Police on behalf of the Coroner and the workplace regulator SafeWork NSW, and we will be assisting those authorities with the investigations.”

The company says it closed the Port Botany site pending clearance from authorities and was working with shipping line clients and the landside logistics sector on alternative arrangements.

“We understand the closure will have some impact upon scheduling of pickup and delivery of containers and will use our best endeavours to meet client requirements.

“We greatly appreciate your understanding at this difficult time.”

A SafeWork NSW spokesperson tells ATN: “SafeWork NSW is responding to a workplace incident at a Port Botany site yesterday where a worker sustained fatal crush injuries between two containers.

“Inspectors were back on site this morning accompanied by engineering inspectors, and the investigation is ongoing.”
