The Western Roads Federation (WRF) and NT Road Transport Association’s (NTRTA) northern and north-western Australia event series has reached the Kimberley, with organisers noting business appreciation of transport and logistics’ pivotal role in supporting them.

They underscore the challenges of a region twice the size of Victoria while pointing out that new projects and economic growth opportunities are emerging there.

These range from the $1.5 billion Sea Dragon prawn farm with 10,000 hectares of growing out ponds and a processing plant in Kununurra to new rare earth mines, on-shore oil and gas opportunities and more.

But the huge potential comes with many supply chain challenges.

Recognising these challenges Kimberley business leaders and local transport operators have come to together to prioritise the critical issues and put forward realistic solutions, the representatives say.

Two Kimberley forums were organised in-conjunction with chambers of commerce in the East Kimberley (Kununurra) and West Kimberley (Broome).

Business leaders "welcomed the input and ideas of transport operators".

"You could sense the rising degree of respect by business leaders and government representatives for the transport industry as the forum progressed," Western Roads Federation CEO Cam Dumesny, who is on the road with NTRTA executive officer Louise Bilato, tells ATN.

"The ability of transport operators to put forward efficient supply chain solutions that considered all modes not just road really impressed the business leaders present.

"The issues and solutions are being gathered by Western Roads Federation and NT Road Transport Association as part of developing a comprehensive multi-regional transport and logistics strategy for WA and the NT.

"The forums also provided the opportunity to update both business leaders and transport operators on changes to regulations including the HNVL, transport industry mental health as well as updates on national transport issues."

The next forums are being held in Karratha tomorrow and Kalgoorlie on December 7.

On Monday and Tuesday, December 3-4, NTRTA and WRF will be presenting at the Unlocking the North conference in Darwin, where the key issues of logistics and liveability will be addressed.  Unlocking the North, will bring together all the shires of the Kimberley plus Cocos-Keeling and Christmas Island Shires.  For information on events go to www.westernroads.com.au
