Oversize Overmass inquiry deadline nears

Consultation phase underway for long-awaited review

Time is running out to participate in an independent review into the delays heavy vehicle drivers incur in getting road access permits for oversize and overmass (OSOM) vehicle loads.

Federal infrastructure and transport minister Michael McCormack announced in June that the government had appointed WSP Australia consultant Pascal Felix to head up the OSOM review, following industry concerns about delays which in some cases stretched into months on end.

The Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities says that the review is scheduled to be completed by October 2018, after which WSP Australia will provide a report to federal, state and territory transport ministers for their consideration.

It is also calling for any groups wishing to participate in the consultation phase of the review to send their contact details to a departmental address, osomreview@infrastructure.gov.au, for it to pass on to WSP Australia by August 10.

A departmental spokesperson told ATN that no parties had contacted the email address to date.

“Feedback from [WSP Australia] suggests a high level of ongoing interest and engagement with industry and governments,” the spokesperson says.

While the address was not intended to accept submissions, any received would be provided directly to WSP Australia, the department added.

“As the Review of Oversize Overmass Arrangements is being conducted independently, the email address set up by the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities is designed to facilitate timely engagement between WSP Australia and relevant stakeholders,” it says.
