Action against scourge now appearing on one of city's busiest routes
South Australian Police (SAPOL) launched Operation Watercolour today, aimed at targeting rock throwers following reports of incidents occurring on the Southern Expressway.
The focus of the operation is to prevent further incidents and identify suspects relating to any events reported to police.
Assistant commissioner Paul Dickson is coordinating the operation and has ensured a formal approach will be taken in the detection and apprehension of suspects.
“The incidents reported to police highlight the need for an operation over and above the resources that have been directed to the area in light of recent rock throwing events,” Dickson said.
“The behaviour of those linked with these incidents is appalling and extremely dangerous to road users.
“The operation aims to prevent further offences and detect suspects to ensure there are no serious injuries on our roadways connected with these attacks.”
The operation will involve identifying people of interest, as well as dedicated resources and intelligence reviews, SAPOL confirmed in a statement.
“Throughout the operation SAPOL will be directing resources including general patrols, bicycle patrols, mounted and dog operations as well as using the police helicopter,” Dickson said.
“Those detected committing any offences will be held accountable for their actions.
“They face offences ranging from ‘throw missile’ to ‘acts to endanger life’ that can carry a term of imprisonment up to 18 years.
“This remains a significant focus for SAPOL and we will do everything within our resources and powers to ensure we detect any offences.”
