Daimler Truck and Bus has appointed North American Matt Smedley as its head of network development in Australia — working with the Freightliner, Fuso and Mercedes-Benz brands.

Smedley has served with Daimler Trucks North America since 2000, most recently in business development, before accepting the offer to move down under earlier this year.

Daimler Truck and Bus Australia Pacific president Daniel Whitehead says securing Smedley for the role was a "real coup' for the company.

"He has a fantastic track record of success in helping to improve the customer-focussed dealership network in the United States, where Freightliner is a clear market leader," Whitehead adds.

Before taking on the new role, Smedley headed up the rollout of Daimler's Elite Support initiative, which certifies dealerships as being able to rapidly diagnose truck problems and have the parts available to fix them quickly - maximising vehicle uptime to help companies get their vehicles back on the road.

Daimler introduced Elite Support to Australia last year, with the certification process currently being rolled out across the nation's 40 sales dealerships and 20 aftersales and parts centres.

Smedley's role is a new one, built out of a company restructure, Daimler tells ATN
