Fraser recognised in ATA awards

Frances Ross takes out Don Watson Memorial Award at industry showcase

Frasers Livestock Transport managing director Ross Fraser has been recognised for his Outstanding Contribution to the Australian trucking industry in the Australian Trucking Association’s (ATA) National Trucking Industry Awards.

A former chair of the ATA, Fraser was also a founding member of the Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association and Livestock Transporters Association of Queensland – and has been involved in the transport industry for more than 50 years.

In its citation, the ATA says Fraser had gained wide respect serving on many organisation and advisory committees at community as well as local, state and Australian Government levels.

He was also awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2009 for his service to the livestock transport industry and the community of Warwick.

The award was one of many handed out by the ATA at its Awards showcase last week, recognising businesses and individuals who have gone above and beyond to improve their workplace and contribute to the industry.

ATA chair Geoff Crouch says it is important to recognise the work done by people in the transport industry who went the extra mile in their work, and inspired others along the way.

“The winners of these awards have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the Australian trucking industry through their hard work and commitment,” he says.

“I congratulate the winning individuals and businesses in receiving the recognition they deserve.”

R&A Ross Transport co-founder Frances Ross was also recognised for her “conspicuous service to the Australian trucking industry” as the Don Watson Memorial Award winner.

Still involved in the business today, Ross oversees office staff while training her granddaughter, True, to one day take over the family business.

Committed to helping others, Frances has taken part in the i98FM Illawarra Convoy since 2005, helping raise $11.5 million for the local community, and has donated nearly $650,000 on behalf of the Ross family in this time.

The following people and organisations were also recognised for their contribution to the industry:

National Professional Driver of the Year – Barry Fitzgerald, Boral Logistics

Recognised nationally after winning the NSW/ACT award, Fitzgerald has long been dedicated to safety and the education of drivers, producing training videos and assessing new driver applicants for Boral Logistics, where he has worked for the last 25 years of his 45 year career.

Maintaining an unblemished professional record, Fitzgerald has been a member of Boral’s Safety Committee for 20 years and was a drivers’ representative on Boral’s Enterprise Bargaining Committee for 16 years.

National Trucking Industry Woman of the Year – Belinda Polglase, All Purpose Transport

Polglase is Project Manager at All Purpose Transport, having joined the company more than 18 years ago, and was named the Queensland Trucking Association Trucking Woman of the Year in 2017.

She has helped develop youth engagement program and an initiative to skill the All Purpose workforce in a Certificate III or higher qualification, as well as actively contributing to information days and school visits to promote the industry.

National Training Excellence Award – Brown & Hurley

Truck dealer Brown & Hurley was recognised for its commitment to training, having started the process of in-house technical training in 2008, before officially opening its own purpose built technical training facility in 2012.

The facility is equipped with a classroom with 12 computer stations, a Cummins certified technical trainer and a training shop that is fitted with the same tools used in the working environment.

TruckSafe John Kelly Memorial Award – JJ Lawson Transport

Recognised for its exceptional implementation of the TruckSafe program, which it first joined in 2002, JJ Lawson Transport has developed a reputation for dedicated personal service in the customs clearance, freight and transport industry.
