McCormack makes first transport speech Wednesday

Australian Logistics Council dinner set to play host to new minister

Federal minister for infrastructure and transport Michael McCormack will deliver his first major address in the role to a meeting of the Australian Logistics Council (ALC) on Wednesday night.

McCormack has been the focus of significant media attention in recent weeks after taking on the ministerial role and that of deputy prime minister from Barnaby Joyce, who returned to the backbenches in February.

ALC managing director Michael Kilgariff said he was thrilled that Mr McCormack would be speaking at the council’s annual dinner, to be held alongside the ALC Forum.

“ALC Forum is the most significant annual gathering of professionals involved in the nation’s freight logistics industry, and this year’s event comes at the crucial time, as the Federal Government continues developing the National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy, ahead of its expected release in November,” Kilgariff says.

“The Strategy is not just an industry blueprint, but a significant national economic initiative. It is imperative that we get policy settings right now, so that Australia can meet its growing national freight task.”

Kilgariff said Mr McCormack’s attendance at the forum was confirmation that the government aimed to engage closely with the industry on development of the strategy, which aims to help increase the productivity and efficiency of Australia’s freight supply chain.

“We also look forward to hearing about progress on major national freight logistics infrastructure projects, including the Inland Rail and Western Sydney Airport,” he says.

Shadow minister for infrastructure, transport, cities and regional development Anthony Albanese and NSW minister for roads, maritime and freight Melinda Pavey will also give presentations at the Forum.
