The Ballarat-bound lane on the Western Freeway in Bacchus Marsh has been opened since a collision involving two trucks disturbed traffic movement this morning.

Two B-doubles travelling inbound collided on the Highway at Darley, less than 60km nort west of Melbourne, at 7.40am today.

Victoria Police said that one of the trucks collided with the rear of the other truck, making it veer up the road and burst into flames.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and contained the flames of the burning truck.

The driver of one of the trucks suffered severe head injuries and was flown to the Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

The other driver is reported to have been unscathed.

While full details on how the accident happened are yet to surface, it has been reported that ongoing road works in the area to build a second off-ramp on the Highway may have made traffic conditions a little dangerous on the existing lanes.

VicRoads states clean-up on the outbound road is complete and traffic movement has been restored to normal.

However, Melbourne-bound traffic is currently being detoured through Bacchus Marsh Rd, with VicRoads estimating the road to remain closed until 6pm.
