Truck explosion causes delays of up to 12 hours on Brisbane M1

Northbound lanes have reopened but southbound lanes to remain closed for potentially 12 hours

At around 8.40am this morning police were called to a truck explosion at Loganholme, blocking southbound lanes of the Pacific Motorway.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services battled the blaze, after the truck carrying hydrochloric acid exploded into flames.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman has confirmed the driver of the truck managed to get himself out of the cab unharmed before emergency services arrived.

The M1 was initially closed in both directions from 8.40am with police diverting southbound traffic at the Bryants road exit, while emergency services were using the northbound lanes.

A Queensland Police update has established that the northbound lanes of the M1 have re-opened to traffic, and a recovery vehicle is enroute which will remove the hazard.

Traffic is expected to be disrupted for most of the afternoon and the southbound lanes, according to Queensland Police, will remain closed for ‘some time’.

According to police, the emergency declaration imposed under the Public Safety Preservation Act covers the both north and southbound lanes of the Pacific Motorway and a one kilometre radius of the fire site.

Due to the fumes, people in the immediate vicinity have been asked to say indoors and anyone with breathing difficulties should have medication or breathing aids with them.
