Reminder: NSW contract rates change on Saturday

ARTIO NSW asks principal operators to bear in mind the changes following the varied GCCD

The Australian Road Transport Industrial Organisation (ARTIO) NSW is reminding principal contractors covered by the NSW General Carriers Contract Determination that rates payable under the varied Determination will increase starting Saturday.

New rates will be applicable from the first full pay period on or after April 15.

The rate increase is part of the agreement negotiated between the Transport Workers’ Union (TWU), ARTIO NSW and other employer representative bodies last month, ARTIO NSW secretary/treasurer Hugh McMaster reminds operators.

Standing or hourly rates payable under the Determination will increase by 2.5 per cent across all vehicle classes, while running rates will remain unchanged, McMaster notes.

“The actual rate of increase, which is the first since late 2014, will vary according to hours worked and kilometres travelled by the contract carrier over a pay cycle,” he says.

“This increase applies to general freight work undertaken by contract carriers for principal contractors where the work takes place within the County of Cumberland, (basically greater metropolitan Sydney), and on any other journey undertaken elsewhere in NSW within a 50 kilometre radius of the point of origin.

“This increase does not apply to areas of work covered by the Determination from 1 January 2019, including journeys to Wollongong or Newcastle, or work within sectors such as refrigerated transport and furniture removals.”

ARTIO NSW is planning to hold industry briefings in Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle next month to explain the changes to operators.
