WARTA says it is next step addresses the major productivity barrier at the port

WA industry gives Roe 9 announcement thumbs up
Colin Barnett says he will build the tunnel if re-elected

The Western Australian Road Transport (WARTA) has welcomed premier Colin Barnett’s decision on the next phase of the Perth Freight Link initiative – Roe 9.

Bouyed by polling indicating a narrow majority of popular support for the state government’s road infrastructure strategy, Barnett has promised, if reelected, to build a $903 million tunnel between the Winterfold Road and Stock Road intersection to High Street in East Fremantle.

This would link with the present Roe 8 section and would be part of a 5km stretch towards to port of Fremantle.

Echoing Infrastructure Australia’s views on the issue, it sees landside transport efficiency at Fremantle Port as a major productivity barrier.

"The cost of this landside inefficiency directly adds to Perth and our State’s cost of living whilst reducing the global competitiveness of our export sectors," WARTA road transport executive director Cam Dumesny says.

"WARTA endorses a combination solution of rail and road as the best means of achieving landside efficiency.

"This announcement addressing the road connection is a critical part of the multi-modal solution required for the port.

"The announcement ends the uncertainty over the future of the Port, enabling our members to make investment decisions that in many cases have been on hold.

"The industry believes that the Tunnel option is the best balance between the needs of transport efficiency and local resident amenity.

"The industry accepts that a small percentage of some loads however will not be able to use the tunnel.

"However delivery of the final connections all the way through to the Roe Highway, will translate to major saving in time and costs, whilst reducing emissions, noise and heavy transport from surrounding road networks and their communities."
