SA govt taps Aurecon for overpass review

Review of other bridges across SA in the pipeline

The South Australian government has announced plans to appoint engineering firm Aurecon to conduct an external review of the South Road overpass.

It has all but confirms a number of other bridges will be probed.

The review aims to determine the cause of the problems linked with the movement of the pedestrian and cycling pathway over South Road at Glandore.

“This is in addition to the government’s routine inspection regime, which involves engineers carefully assessing each bridge and identifying any maintenance work that needs to be completed,” transport and infrastructure minister Stephen Mullighan says.

“Each bridge component is rigorously examined to ensure the structure remains safe for travel.

While a temporary fix has allowed movement of traffic in the area, the problem is far from over.

The government reiterates the possibility of providing compensation to the businesses affected by the closure of the road.

Although the South Australian Small Business Commissioner’s (SASBC) office has started gathering details of claimed losses from affected businesses, Mullighan warns that it will take some time to review the requests.

The SASBC will examine each claim and prepare advice on “whether ex-gratia payments should be considered by the state government”.

While Aurecon has been engaged to conduct a review of the South Road overpass, the government plans to employ other external resources to the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure to review other bridges across the state.

ATN has requested the minister’s office to provide details of other bridges that have been earmarked for review.
