The former cricketer and public speaker passed away in Melbourne today
The National Road Transport Association (NatRoad) has expressed grief at the passing of former Australian cricketer Max Walker, who succumbed to cancer earlier today.
Nicknamed ‘Tangles’ for his unique bowling style, Walker went on to become a well-known media personality, author and public speaker after retiring from cricket.
Walker became a seasoned cricket presenter for radio and television, and also hosted various non-sporting events, including a few of NatRoad’s annual conferences.
NatRoad president Allan Thornley offered condolences.
“NatRoad is greatly saddened by the news of Max Walker’s passing,” Thornley tells ATN.
“Through his role as MC of a number of our National Conferences, the last in August 2015 – he became a friend to many of our members.
“We deeply valued his professionalism and skill, and his humour and unsurpassed storytelling ability added something special to these events.
“His ability to weave a great story about his life as a footballer, cricketer, architect, author and family man into his role was exceptional – and they usually carried a valuable message, whether it be about luck, perseverance, determination, the joy of living or love.
“A true Australian Icon, he will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with the family he so dearly loved at this difficult time.”
