Industry mourns Bob Shand’s passing

Industry saddened by the passing of one of Western Star’s Australian co-founders

Industry legend Bob Shand.

The industry is mourning the passing of legend Bob Shand, one of the co-founders of Western Star trucks in Australia.

Shand, who played a key role in bringing the brand down under in 1983 with Kit Bleakly, established the brand’s presence through a facility in Wacol, Queensland, where it remains 33 years on.

Paying tribute to Shand, Western Star’s local parent company, Penske Commercial Vehicles (PCV,) says his “legacy will forever remain” in the company which “remains indebted to Bob and his work”.

He will be remembered for “his unwavering commitment to the customer, as he strove always to deliver a tailored customer experience,” PCV says.

“This commitment and spirit continues to be the driving force behind the Western Star Trucks brand, despite market and ownership changes.

“The renowned features of today’s modern day Stars – including their strength, reliability and comfort – come as a result of Bob’s commitment to establish Western Star as the truck of choice in the Australian market.

“We will miss him greatly and our deepest sympathies go out to the entire Shand family.”
