Australian Trucking Association (ATA) is urging Western Australia-based owner-drivers and small business operators to share their concerns regarding the now-abolished Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal (RSRT)’s ‘safe rates’ order during tomorrow’s consultation session in Perth.

The industry consultation is part of series of such events organised by the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (ASBFEO) across regional Australia to investigate the impact of the RSRT’s Contractor Driver Minimum Payments Road Safety Remuneration Order 2016 (RSRO) on the small business sector.

ATA Christopher Melham says the RSRT’s price-fixing order placed a huge burden on small trucking businesses "without any safety benefits to show for it".

"This order put the fundamental viability of our industry under threat," Melham says.

"Owner drivers were losing their livelihoods and family businesses were folding under the pressure of this unfair, two-tier payment system.

"Owner drivers and small trucking businesses right across Australia stood up and said this wasn’t right.

"As a result of the industry’s massive grassroots campaign, the RSRT was abolished in April.

"However, it’s essential the spectre of the RSRT can’t come back to haunt small trucking operators.

"I encourage Perth owner drivers to participate in the ASBFEO’s consultation session, and make sure your experiences with the RSRT are heard."

Melham says the removal of the RSRT remained a key issue for the trucking industry in the lead up to the federal election.

He has repeatedly called for political parties and candidates to support the termination of the tribunal and not re-establish any similar price-fixing mechanism once elected to power in next month’s elections.

ASBFEO’s Perth consultation session will be held tomorrow from 9-11am at the Midland Sports Complex (Tennis/Bowls Club), Lot 21 Patterson Drive, Middle Swan, Perth.
