The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) has announced Lauren Canellis as its newest policy officer.

Offering a legal background, having previously worked for Canberra-based firm Maliganis Edwards Johnson covering compensation claims arising from automotive accidents, Canellis says she understands the issues facing transport operators and drivers.

“I have seen first-hand the obstacles faced by those in the trucking industry, and feel that my legal training has given me the skills to help make positive changes in this area,” she says.

“Driving trucks and running a transport company is a physically demanding and emotionally taxing job.

“I would like to make it easier for those working within the trucking industry to understand their rights and obligations, as well as to get their work done safely and within reasonable timeframes.”

While she has a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts from the Australian National University and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, Canellis also brings personal experience to the job.

“My grandparents ran a trucking business throughout most of my childhood – Pop was an owner driver, and Nan helped out with the bulk of the paperwork as his literacy levels were low,” she says.

Canellis completed her bachelor in 2013 and her diploma in 2014.
