ATA says related training and awareness program needed for heavy vehicle inspectors

New edition of National Heavy Vehicle Inspection Manual launched
Australian Trucking Association has urged NHVR to initiate a training and awareness program for heavy vehicle inspectors

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has released new national inspection standards for the trucking industry.

The latest edition of the National Heavy Vehicle Inspection Manual has been developed in consultation with jurisdictions, police and industry associations, including the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) to ensure it remains up to date and easier to read and use.

The new manual includes test guideline for heavy vehicle inspections, practical information about wear, damage or change to important systems regarding vehicle in-service inspections for owners, operators and administrators for all Australian states.

Welcoming the updated edition, ATA CEO Christopher Melham says the NHVR must initiate a training and awareness program to ensure heavy vehicle inspectors "interpret and apply the standards in a uniform and nationally consistent manner".

The manual applies to all vehicles that have a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) greater than 4.5 tonnes.

"With a single set of uniform standards to work from, trucking operators can avoid the frustration of enforcement officers applying different standards in different states and territories," Melham says.
