More road and rest stop upgrades set for funding: Truss

Federal Government announces 36 more projects under the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity program

The Federal Government has announced a further 36 projects that will be funded under its Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity program.

The $37.5 million in allocated funding is in addition to some $120 million which will be spent on 27 projects in NSW – which were announced in February.

“Nationally, the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program will provide $200 million for projects through to 2019,” federal infrastructure minister Warren Truss says.

“This will contribute up to half of the costs of each project, with the remainder provided by relevant councils and state and territory governments.

The 36 projects announced today cover each of the remaining states and the Northern Territory. They include plans to upgrade truck bays and rest areas on the Roper Highway in the Northern Territory; road widening and intersection upgrades on the Gregory Highway in Queensland; and improved access to the Great Eastern Highway from Coolgardie in Western Australia.

State and territory transport ministers joined Truss for the announcement today, saying more accessible roads will naturally contribute to stronger local economies.

“These projects will improve the safety environment for heavy vehicle drivers and increase road transport productivity,” Victoria’s Luke Donnellan says.

Federal opposition spokesman on transport and infrastructure Anthony Albanese says the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity program had been initiated by the previous Labor government in 2008.
