LBCA 2015: Barney Hayes awarded lifetime membership of LBCA
Honoured: Former LBCA president Barney Hayes has been awarded lifetime membership of the association.

Former Livestock and Bulk Carriers Association (LBCA) president Barney Hayes has been awarded lifetime membership of the group in recognition of his achievements.

The LBCA used its annual conference to award Hayes, who stepped down from the presidency last year after four years in the role.

LBCA president Jock Carter presented an award to his predecessor and has praised him for his efforts, which included playing a pivotal part in achieving a livestock loading scheme for NSW operators and the removal of stamp duty on new trailers.

"He has made a huge difference as president in the time he was there. The LBCA has gone from strength to strength," Carter told ATN.

"Barney has been very good at presenting solutions rather than just highlighting problems."

Hayes was shocked to receive the award, but the biggest surprise may have been how the LBCA managed to keep him in the dark about it until the announcement was made.

Carter says Hayes has built a reputation of always knowing what is going on – something Hayes himself referred to when he spoke after receiving lifetime membership.

"Jock, how you kept it from me has got me buggered. I thought I knew everything."

"To be honoured like this is pretty good."

Carter expressed satisfaction at managing to surprise Hayes, but realises it may be a short-lived victory.

"You almost get the feeling that when you ring him he is anticipating your call. That is why it was very nice to have him not in the know," Carter says.

"I’m sure there will be some payback at some stage."
