GEA launches gas fuel campaign

Draft consultation papers on LNG and CNG available on new website.

Gas Energy Australia (GEA) has issued two industry and community consultation papers in a bid to clear hurdles for the use of natural gas in transport.

Focused on LNG and CNG, the draft papers explore current use, barriers to uptake, potential for increased use and associated benefits.

The CNG paper calls for a joint industry and government effort to boost its use as a transport fuel, while LNG gains a 10 point plan for increased use.

“LNG is around 25 to 30 per cent less expensive than diesel and trucks running on LNG and CNG produce up to 25 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions than diesel-powered trucks,” GEA CEO Mike Carmody says.

Goals include at least 25 per cent of on-road heavy duty trucks gas-powered by 2030, at least 50 per cent off-road heavy duty trucks and machinery bought from 2030 onwards be gas-powered, and trains on 50 per cent of routes to be gas-powered.

“Natural gas is a viable competitor to diesel for road transport, yet most Australians don’t realise its potential,” Carmody says.

“Our campaign aims to arm Australians with the facts on gas and allow them to petition for government action via the campaign website.”

The start of the campaign coincides with the start of the Gas 2014 conference in Melbourne today.
