Sheldon, Kaine re-elected to top TWU posts
Four more years: Tony Sheldon has been re-elected as the TWU's national secretary.

Tony Sheldon and Michael Kaine have retained their grip on the two most senior posts within the Transport Workers Union (TWU) until at least 2018.

TWU members unanimously endorsed Sheldon and Kaine for the positions of national secretary and national assistant secretary for the next four years.

Sheldon says he and Kaine will now focus on recruiting, organising and mobilising truck drivers, aviation employees and other workers in the transport industry to push for safe and secure jobs.

Kaine says fighting to retain the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal (RSRT) will also be among the TWU’s priorities.

He says the tribunal is the only body with the power to prevent clients using their economic clout to undermine safety conditions in the trucking industry.

"Over the next four years, it is our intention to fight back against these corporate bullies, to unite transport workers and raise standards for themselves, their families and the community," he says.

Sheldon says the re-election of him and Kaine is a vote of confidence in the TWU’s Towards 2035 campaign, which aims to achieve 70 per cent density of union membership across the transport industry.

"The TWU National Council endorsed a 21 year plan for growth at our National Council earlier in 2014.  Since then, our union has being consulting with members about this vision and listening to their concerns and hopes for their workplaces and indeed their communities," Sheldon says.
