Assistant employment minister Luke Hartsuyker has turned to the transport and logistics industry to flag the Federal Government’s latest youth effort.

Hartsuyker toured Toll Group’s distribution facility at Eastern Creek in Sydney to discuss the company’s successful trainee program yesterday as the Training for Employment Scholarship was launched.

"The Toll Express trainee program is exactly the sort of mix of on-the-job and formal training that helps young job seekers learn the skills and behaviours needed in the workplace and puts them on track to a long-term career," he says.

"Participants gain work experience in areas such as fleet management, warehousing and customer service and can also gain accredited qualifications in areas such as workplace health and safety, logistics and driver operations.

"Toll also wins by having staff with the right skills in the right jobs across its workforce."

The Government is clear on the need to match training with employer needs, which the initiative is aimed at facilitating.

"The new Training for Employment Scholarship announced today will provide funding to small and medium enterprises in regional Australia so they can put in place an appropriate mix of training strategies like those that have been used on a larger scale at Toll," Hartsuyker says.

"In addition, the Government has a range of incentives to help employers and job seekers including: the Job Commitment Bonus to encourage young job seekers to get and keep a job; Relocation Assistance to help meet the costs of moving to take up a job; and wage subsidies for eligible job seekers on income support.

"The Transport, Logistics and Warehousing industry is expected to add 32,100 new jobs by November 2018.

"I congratulate Toll for its efforts to help young job seekers into this growth industry.

"I encourage all young job seekers to take advantage of the range of Government assistance available and the opportunities in the transport and logistics industry."
