New South Wales trucking operator Rodney’s Transport Services (RTS) is continuing its impressive growth just over 20 years since opening its doors.

RTS has grown considerably since starting out with three trucks in 1992 and now boasts a fleet of 144 vehicles.

The Wagga Wagga based firm has doubled its prime mover fleet in the last five years.

RTS managing director Peter Rodney attributes the company’s success to his 68 staff, saying their hard work has helped the business evolve.

"This business is not easy. If it was everybody would be doing it," he says.

"I’ve got a great team of people who work for me from management through to drivers."

Rodney says the last six to eight months have been tough in the industry.

"It’s a hard gig to keep it all going," he says.

"You have to watch your margins and your operating costs and work smarter, not harder."

Rodney has listed safety and compliance as two of the major issues confronting trucking today, but adds that more must also be done to attract young people to the industry.

"The young generation is a little bit different though and we have to start working with them and teach them how to run this business otherwise we won’t have anyone to fill the positions," Rodney says.

"It’s a very changing industry and we have to change with it."

RTS transports livestock and a variety of agricultural products including fertiliser, gypsum and grain.
